THE TAMING OF THE SHREW

THE TAMING OF THE SHREW
BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

FOR HIM
FOR HER

SUMMER 2016, LONDON (DATES TBA)

A CONTEMPORARY PRODUCTION OF SHAKESPEARE'S FAMOUS PLAY ABOUT LOVE AND POSSESSION, OBEDIENCE AND POWER, WHICH TACKLES CURRENT ISSUES SUCH AS INDEPENDENCE, EMANCIPATION AND THE RIGHT OF SELF-DETERMINATION.

THE PLAY IS SET IN A WORLD IN WHICH MEN BUY AND SELL WOMEN AND TREAT THEM AS THEIR POSSESSIONS. UNLIKE MANY OTHER PRODUCTIONS OF SHAKESPEARE'S PLAY, WHICH IS OFTEN DESCRIBED AS MISOGYNIST, THIS PRODUCTION DOESN'T TRY TO SOFTEN THE EDGES BY NOT TAKING KATHARINA'S FINAL SPEECH AND HER SUBMISSION TO MEN TOO SERIOUSLY. QUITE THE CONTRARY, IT HIGHLIGHTS THE BRUTALITY IN SHAKESPEARE'S TEXT AND ASKS FOR ITS RELEVANCE IN OUR TIME AND SOCIETY.

EVEN NOWADAYS, SOME PEOPLE ARE BEING TREATED AS PROPERTIES. MODERN SLAVERY AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN EUROPE IS AN OFTEN OVERLOOKED PROBLEM. THIS CONTEMPORARY PRODUCTION OF ONE OF SHAKESPEARE'S MOST CONTROVERSIAL PLAYS OFFERS A NEW ANGLE AND AIMS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF AN GROWING ISSUE, YET OFTEN IGNORED.
